What is a TENS Unit and how should
I decide which one is for me?
TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulator. It uses mild electrical stimulation to limit the nerve's ability to transmit the pain signal to the brain. Unlike other types of treatment for pain relief, use of a TENS Units has become a popular a non-addictive alternative. Concerning
what TENS Unit is best for you:
If your TENS Unit has stopped working or has lost it's strength then check to see if the battery needs to be replaced. Most units have an indicator light for this purpose. You can also check to make sure that the lead wires have been properly plugged into the unit and also check if the lead wires are properly inserted into the electrodes. You can also check if the lead wires themselves are damaged and need to be replaced. It is also important to make sure your TENS unit has it's control settings set to the values prescribed by your medical professional. It is common if you feel stronger sensation in one electrode more than another because one side of the body is more sensitive. If the unit is still not working properly then check to see if the electrodes are in good working condition. If you are using reusable, self-adhesive electrodes then make sure they are moist and free from dirt. Make sure to follow the instructions on proper care and usage for your electrodes.
It is important that you closely follow the instructions written on your package of electrodes. If you are using self-adhesive, repositional electrodes then make sure that the plastic sheet that protects the electrodes are removed before using. After the electrodes first use these types of electrodes need to have their adhesive gel activated with a few drops of water. This can be done by simply dipping two fingers in water and then rubbing the gels parts of the electrodes. Wait about a minute then place on your skin. It is important to remember to replace your electrodes back on to the plastic sheet immediately after each use. This will prevent the electrodes from drying up and from attracting dirt. There will be a point where activating your electrodes with water will not longer be effective and need to be replaced. In most cases, there is an electrode to fit your particular need: Perhaps you need electrodes that are gentle for sensitive skin…. Or maybe you need electrodes that will not rip your hair when removed…. Or Perhaps you need electrodes that need to remain on the skin for an unusually long amount of time…. Or maybe you need electrodes that can withstand humid weather or excessive perspiration…. Or perhaps you need electrodes that are flexible and pliable enough to wrap an area such as your finger….. Or maybe you need electrodes that will not cause you to break out in a rash….. Or perhaps you need large electrodes that will cover a surface like your back.
Do place the electrodes only as your medical professional
recommends. |
